At five, the child was asked to write down seven snacks for the coming week. At six, he went shopping for that list with Mum. At seven, he began buying the snacks himself at the nearby shop. At eight, he had to write why he wanted a book or a toy. One request explained that he wanted to read about Admiral Yi Sun-sin to find out why everyone thought he was so impressive. Years later, as a new middle-school student, he presented his parents with an 11-slide PowerPoint explaining why he needed an iPad: online prices, the pros and cons of tablets, and why it still made sense for him.
